Have you ever been amazed how your horse can withstand the heat in the summer and yet be fine outdoors in the winter time? Recently I found research done in the United Kingdom studying the coats of horses that died in the summer and the coats of those died in the fall.

The researchers the thickness of the skin layers, the density of the individual hairs, and the number and volume of the sweat and sebaceous glands of ponies, non-Thoroughbreds and Thoroughbreds.

As might be expected, there was a higher number of sweat glands in comparison in the Thoroughbreds and the non-Thoroughbreds compared to the ponies. The non-Thoroughbreds and the ponies’ sebaceous glands were busier in the summer wicking away sweat from their coats.

Of these three equine groups, the Thoroughbreds results were more stunning. The researchers have thought that it may be of their Arabian ancestry with its roots in a hotter climate that made the difference. The Thoroughbreds skin was much thinner in the summer than a non-Thoroughbred. They had the greatest skin change from summer to winter with a larger increase of sebaceous gland volume. Interestingly the Thoroughbreds had higher volume measurements for the sebaceous glands in the winter than the non-Thoroughbreds and the ponies. The sebaceous glands secrete an oily substance which in the winter helps with waterproofing the coat while in the summer helps wick sweat through the equine coat.

Although horse owners know that their horses do well in both climates, it is amazing how their hydration levels change and just how adaptable horses are.

Spain Outdoor Pool Fencing Guide

The First Layer of Protection for a pool in Spain ( Vallas para piscinas ): No one thing can make a pool safe at all times. Multiple layers of protection are necessary to address the specific risks present when the pool is in use and when it is not. For outdoor pools the first and most basic item of protection is an adequate and secure fence ( valla piscina ) that will both prevent access when the pool is closed and unattended and control access when the pool is open and being supervised. Requirements for pool fences ( vallas piscinas ) construction vary by locale; some local jurisdictions have stricter requirements than others so you should check with local agencies (city or county board of health, building department, etc.) for specific public pool requirements in your immediate area.

Height: Though some jurisdictions permit fences as low as four feet tall, prudency requires at least five, preferably six feet of protection. There are some jurisdictions that require fences eight and even 10 feet tall around outdoor pools.

Construction: Spacing between vertical elements should not exceed four inches both to prevent access and to meet fencing codes aimed at preventing head entrapment that do not allow openings between four and ten inches. The horizontal space between elements (and the size of chain link or lattice openings) has been reduced to 1.25” in many jurisdictions to prevent climbing . Fence materials should be durable, low maintenance, and reasonably priced.

Gates, Doors, and Locks: Gates should be limited in number (but enough to meet life safety codes). They should be self-closing with self-latching locks that are sufficiently high to prevent small children from opening them. All gates should be positioned such that they can be easily observed by lifeguards or other safety staff. They should be actively monitored or controlled by security hardware while the pool is open and locked while the pool is closed.

Doors into an adjacent building should have self-closing hardware; doors from an adjacent building should allow access only to deck areas that are easily monitored by the on-duty lifeguard; they should be locked when the pool is closed and unguarded. All other gates or doors (e.g., to pool chemical or other service areas) should be locked and closed except when being actively used.

Other Considerations: Accessibility: All pool areas should be protected from unauthorized access by children. However, they should be accessible to all authorized adult users, including those with disabilities. Because the height of an adult in a wheel chair is very similar to the height of a child, child-resistant latches should be used – i.e., latches that require strength or agility beyond that of small children.

Wading Pools: Wading pools should be separated by fencing that prevents small children from having easy access to a deeper pool. If the wading pool is within the perimeter of the taller pool-area fencing, the minimum recommended height for the wading pool fence is four feet (48 inches). Gates into the wading pool area must be self-closing and self-latching. In facilities having multiple types of pools or spas it is advisable to separate (or have the capability of separating) each pool.

Additional Security: Open pools should have the protection of well trained, vigilantly scanning lifeguards. Closed pools should have one or more of the following security measures:
• signs – Pool Closed or No Trespassing
• storage – any storage should be kept away from the fence so it cannot be used as a climbing aid
• motion-activated lighting
• security cameras – monitored or recording
• pool alarms or sonic monitoring – to activate private or public emergency response
• pool and/or spa covers – should be locked to make the pool completely inaccessible
• private security surveillance (i.e., guard service)

Fun things to do in your kitchen

If you’re tired of doing the same old thing in the kitchen, always cooking the same stuff, I recommend looking into getting new products that will let you do different things. Here are some examples.

1. Canning food. Get something like the presto pressure canner and start canning your own meats, fruits and vegetables. You’ll save on grocery bills, especially if you have the garden to support it, and it will give you something new to eat during the off seaons.

2. Try frying at home. Get a deep fryer like the DeLonghi deep fryer and start making your own french fries at home. If you use a healthy cooking oil it will be better for you than going to a restaurant.

3. Or if your equipment is the problem, put in a new sink or faucet. Maybe you just need inspiration to make better meals. Try getting a new bar sink faucet and see if that livens up your entertainment room and bar area.

I like to make things interesting, learn new tricks, ask other people what they do. It’s amazing what I’ve found I can do when I try. For instance, canned meat looks completely disgusting but actually tastes really good. I’ve learned that frying my own food requires very hot oil and it’s easy to get burned, so be careful.

Never be afraid to try something new. Finding new foods and trying new methods is what makes life interesting. Maybe you’ll discover something new you didn’t know you were good at.

The Sandwich – No Longer Just a Slab of Bread and Meat

The sandwich has become one of the food staples that keeps us going. In fact there are places to get great sandwiches and subs all over the world. Places like Bob’s Pantry in Highland Park and Ravinia Illinois – a famous Ravinia Deli.

The sandwich goes back at least three hundred years. Today a typical sandwich consists of two pieces of bread with filler in between. But early sandwiches were not always like this.

On the one hand, the now common sandwich traces its ancestry back to the wrap. We have records of an ancient Jewish food preparation consisting of Paschal lamb wrapped between two pieces of flat unleavened bread during Passover.

On the other hand, some of the earliest sandwiches were more or less open faced sandwiches. Before the 1800′s slices of stale bread were used by taverns instead of plates. They would place these slabs of bread – known as trenchers – on the tables and meat or other food would be placed on top of them where the bread would sop up the juices from the meal. After the main meal was finished the trencher was either eaten by the diner or given to the dogs hovering nearby.

The word “sandwich” began to be used in the mid to late 1700s because the 4th Earl of Sandwich would often order his valet to bring him his food in a manner that allowed him to carry on with other activities. More often than not this consisted of meat between two pieces of bread. This allowed him to continue playing cards or carry on with his desk work without getting his hands greasy by having to handle meat directly.

Others in fashionable London eventually started asking for “the same as Sandwich”. Eventually the name caught on to describe what we now call a “finger food” that could be eaten without having to handle the wide variety of fillings that could be stuffed between two slices of bread.

By the 1800′s a sandwich usually meant a piece or several pieces of cold meat slapped in between two pieces of bread. Today there are many varieties of sandwiches, and many businesses that have profited from just selling sandwiches.

Today’s sandwiches have grown from being just meat in between bread. Now we have added condiments and toppings to them. Some common condiments added are lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise, pickles, mustard, relish, ketchup and many more. These are just a very few of what is out there to use to create your own masterpiece.

There are hundreds of different types of meats and sandwich fillers that one can add to them as well. When you walk into a carry out restaurant or deli store you order exactly what you want on that sandwich. Some restaurants have even created hot versions of sandwiches. These are much tastier than ones in the 1800′s.

When you go into the supermarket for the weekly shopping, most people stop by the deli to get their favorite luncheon meats. Eating these deli foods has become a regular part of our diet. Deli foods now are not limited to just sliced meats. They also include cheeses and pre made salads, thus transforming the old style sandwich into a modern creation with hundreds of variations.

There are many different types of breads available too. The same sandwich can become a completely different creation depending on the bread that is used. That makes what used to be the common sandwich into a more exotic, more nutritious, and more tasty alternative to heavier fare. making lunches and dinners easier to do at a much more rapid pace. Sandwiches are a quick fix to supper and can accommodate even the busiest of schedules.

So as one can see, sandwiches have gone from the simple bread and meat variety into a nutritious food with a thousand variations. Each one is created to suit an individual’s needs and desires and they are perfect for the rushed pace that many people live their lives at.

These days having a sandwich doesn’t mean sitting at a smokey tavern sopping up juices with stale bread.
